Dune: Prophecy – First Impressions

Two episodes in, here are my thoughts on the HBO Max TV series, Dune: Prophecy. (Book spoilers may be included)

The show seems to be loosely based on “Sisterhood of Dune”, first in the “Great Schools of Dune Trilogy”. Events happen probably after the books contents. Here’s a timeline of the books from reddit:

So far I feel that it’s a decent addition to the Dune universe, delving on the origins and early start of the Sisterhood. It is also refreshing to watch not another remake/version of the first book/s of the hexalogy.

The fight/training scenes feel a bit awkward, not sure if it’s the actors/choreo or the filming/edit. Kudos though on their implementation of the personal shields, aligned to the books and a throwback to the earlier movie/tv adaptations.

R-13 intimate scene, check. So far they’ve shown multiple instances of recreational use of powders, but never stated that it’s spice from dune/arrakis. I know it is implied, but at least have it said once.

I know there’s always a budget issue with tv production, but as vast/wealthy as the Imperium should be, the palace/throne room was extremely underwhelming.

The soldier from arrakis seemed awfully familiar, so I checked imdb and he is Ragnar from Vikings.

I’ll see if I can write a full review once the season/series ends. Feel free to write your comments of the show or my impressions below. Thanks for reading!
